Implications
Among the open source users, GIMP is a fantastic program. Free, customizable, and very powerful, GIMP can do wonders in the right hands.
Advantages
It's free, upgradable, and has innumberable versions and add-ons
Disadvantages
GIMP is served up as a massive assortment of files that make up the source code, which by the users agreement, is required to be included in every copy. This means the user must compile the Perl code with a Perl compiler, and this can be taxing for individuals who are not well-versed in such operations. Some mirrors include an automatic compiler. However, precompiled binaries may be downloaded.
Also, GIMP's interface is rather messy at times. All the tools exist in their own windows, and there is no overall window the encloses them. This can be an annoyance to beginners, but once gotten used to, is very powerful. Windows may be docked together for better organization.
Downloads
The GIMP homepage can be found at GIMP.org (http://www.gimp.org). There, the FAQ and documentation can guide you through the process of installing the GIMP from source, a difficult thing to do in Windows. Pre-compiled binaries (the easiest way to install GIMP on Windows) can be found here (http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/)
