Basic Use Of Tool
This tool is used to paint terrains and textures onto a map. There are many different types of of terrains, grouped by geographic area or climate. Pick a palette associated with the geographic types you want to use in your scenario. Click on a terrain type, and use the brush to paint the terrain texture onto the map.
Advanced Use Of Tool
Some terrains are special and have additional functions besides adding color and texture to the map.
Bayou: Contains a texture used for the bottoms of shallow water areas in Bayou maps. It disallows building on shallows, but units may pass.
spc_nonpass: A texture for visibly marking off areas of the map where units shouldn't go. It is best used for Capture the Flag or Fort type multiplayer scenarios, where visual landscaping is not important.
Glacier: A Patagonia impassable texture. No units or buildings are allowed on this terrain.
For tips on how to blend terrains and textures, see Kumar's Mixing Terrains guide. It's written for Age of Mythology, but the same concepts and techniques apply for the richer number and variety of terrains in Age of Empires 3.
