Basic Use Of Tool
Places a zone of shallows (units can walk across) across a place in a river.
To use the tool, move the cursor over the river. A blue box will appear on the map spanning a section of the river. Change the width slider bar to change the size of the box. When you are satisfied with the size and location of the box, left-click to anchor the box. Then click Create Shallow. The section of river inside the box is now converted to a ford that units can walk across, and some buildings can be built on as well.
Once you place a shallows, if you change your mind, you can undo it (ctrl-Z or Edit>Undo) but the riverbank may remain changed.
Remember that once you place a Shallows, ships and fishing boats can't go over the Shallows.
Advanced Use Of Tool
The width of Shallows determines how easily units may pass from one side of the river to the other. Using a very broad or narrow width for Shallow tool creates some interesting strategic effects. Use the Paint terrain brush to change the terrain type of Shallows and riverbeds to disallow building on the shallows. Use the Edit water tool to add clumps of rocks, grasses, sedges, and marsh plants to Shallows. A very broad Shallows treated in this way (broader than the river width, or an entire river) can make an attractive and convincing swamp or mud flats for your army to march through.
